Homemade Laundry Soap

I love this laundry soap recipe! It seams like no matter how I've messed up the recipe it never ceases to still clean the cloths! :-)

Grab a big ol' pot and spoon. Make sure your grabbing one that you won't mind not using on anything else afterwards! I keep my pot and spoon in the laundry room so that I know it won't get used for food!

Pour 4 quarts of water into the pot!

Then put the pot on the burner and turn the burner on medium heat.

Now you are going to add 1/2 cup 20 mule Team Borax (Sodium Borate)
And 1/2 cup Arm and Hammer Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate)

Stir these in.

Then grate up 1/2 of a Fels Naptha bar. I use a grater that I know I won't be needing to use with food. I got mine used from Goodwill!

Now pour the grated up bar into the pot.

Turn up the burner to medium high at this point and stir till all the fels naptha is dissolved.

Now you let the soap cool for about an hour or so. You can either leave it in your pan or store it in a big bucket. After it's cooled a bit pour in (up to 3 gallons, I use 1 1/2 gal) HOT water and stir throughly.

~It needs to be stirred once in awhile to keep things mixed up.

~This soap doesn't have a lot of smell so if you prefer, you can add some favorite essential oil!

~I usually just eyeball the amount that I put into the wash, but for a large load 1/2 cup or so works very well! It gives a nice clean to the clothes without the chemical residue that commercial brands can leave behind.

~This batch of laundry soap usually last my family of 3 for about 1 1/2 - 2 months!

Enjoy!

I have always sworn that some day I would actually go to the effort of making my own laundry soap but so far ... nada. Maybe some day though!

Dropping by from the Welcome Wednesday Blog Hop. I am now following and would love a follow back!

I make my own also, but have never made a liquid. I use the same ingredients, but minus the water for a powder. I love homemade detergent...It works great and lasts forever!

How intriguing! I would like to give this a shot. Question: Where do you get the Fels Naptha? Thanks so much for the post!

You can get Fels Naptha bar soap from pretty much any store with cleaners. I get mine from Fred Myers, but I think you can also get it from Winco, Albertsons, Walmart (just to name a few). At Fred Myers it's right along side of the Borax and Washing Soda!

I have been making this in powder form, but could never figure out where to find the Fels Naptha - I am definitely checking out Walmart to see if they carry it - I think I have just been looking the wrong place. I LOVE homemade cleaning products - and its so true, this stuff lasts forever! Thanks for sharing :) :)

I love making my own soap! I do it a little different and have only done the liquid once. I prefer the powder.
